Historic Buildings Survey in Tamashima
The report is to state the results of a Tamashima townscape preservation basic planning survey that has been undertaken from 1990 through 1992. Tamashima is located well near the mouth of the Takahashi River that flows into the Seto Island Sea, in the south of Okayama Prefecture. Tamashima has a history dating back to the 1660's, developing itself through creation of new cropfields by dry-up reclamation and as a trading port to operate waterborne transportation.
The survey has been aimed at presenting the traditional streets remaining in the Tamashima district as stated above, as well as at the preparation of basic data. From the idea that community development in a historic town requires participation by many people and sustained addressing. The survey activities were separated into basic survey work designed to learn the characteristics of the town and work to create opportunities for the Tamashima inhabitants to participate in community development program.
Therefore the present report includes the results achieved by the Tokyo National University Of Fine Arts And Music as well as those by various local organizations, like a local architects' association and junior chamber, which have been thinking about community development requirements.
