(January 17–18, 2020)Waterside Art Tour

This tour is based on the theme of "experiencing art from the waterside." This tour will take you to Kitaibaraki to trace the footsteps of artists who loved the waterside, and to enjoy the "art of nature" such as the Goura coast eroded by rough waves, the singing sands of Nagahama Beach, and the Hanazono Gorge. A highlight of the tour is the local specialty, Anko-nabe.
Kitaibaraki, where the history of modern Japanese art was nurtured
Stroll along the waterside that Tenshin and Ujo loved
This is a unique tour in Kitaibaraki with the theme of "experiencing art from the waterside." You will visit the Tenshin Memorial Museum of Art and Rokkakudo, which was a place of contemplation for Tenshin, and get an impression of many artists and the Goura coast that supported them. At Isohara Beach, we will visit the museum of the birthplace of the poet Noguchi Ujo, which stands overlooking the sea at Isohara. We will also visit Nagahama Beach, famous for its singing sands, and the Hanazono Gorge, as well as the Kitaibaraki City Fisheries History Museum, where we will learn about the traditional culture of the sea, the fishing industry, and the types, ecology and cooking methods of anglerfish, the city's fish. In the evening you can enjoy an Anko-nabe anglerfish hotpot, which is a local specialty. The blessings of the waterside and the beautiful scenery have supported the creative activities of many artists. We will trace their footsteps.

Impressions
I felt sympathy for the rough but somewhat desolate coast of Goura, and through this experience I was able to understand the background of its history as a place where Japanese art developed. (S.N)

I was able to trace the footsteps of artists who had a great influence on Japanese culture, such as Okakura Tenshin and Noguchi Ujo, and felt that the unique scenery of the coast touched people's hearts. This is also an area that was struck by the tsunami during the Great East Japan Earthquake, and from the scars of the tsunami, we learned that water is something that not only enriches people, but on the other hand, when it has a lot of energy, it can take everything away.
