Lighting to symbolize modernization of the city.
The Shinmachi Business Association established a plan in 1993 for the modernization of the Shnmachi business area which is connected to Chiba Railway Station in Chiba City. Large projects in the modernization plan included Chiba Sogo Department store, a corridor mall and an overhead monorail system. Maintenance was also conducted on the sidewalk of the area's main road, National Route 14. Finally, through the cooperation and hard work of local residents, the city, and the business association, the 5 year plan was completed in March, 1998.
The process of developing the consisted of meetings between the business association and concerned residents to decide on appropriate landscape gardening as well as a lighting design. With regard to lighting, a study and observation group was established and full-scale tests were conducted at the actual site using an illuminance meter. I this way, the Shinmachi commercial area came to be built through the combined efforts of the residents.
One of the goals of the lighting design was to introduce order and consistency into the sidewalk and street pole lighting system. Therefore, a uniform design was applied for both the street and sidewalk lighting in the side streets as well as the main street. For the pole lighting system, it was decided to install units that eliminated the overhead electrical wiring, so Iwasaki Electric was consulted by those involved with the design to suggest a suitable luminaire and pole lighting system.
The result of this modernization project has been not only creation of a better shopping environment but also the realization that through the cooperation of business and local residents a city can be shaped in the a way that is pleasing and satisfying for all those involved.
