Welcome to Communication & Learning Lab at Tokyo Gakugei University!
We are interested in how children’s developing language shapes their understanding of the social world. For example, how children distinguish a reliable speaker from an unreliable speaker on the basis of the linguistic expressions used by each speaker.
Most of our studies involve Japanese children between 3 and 12 years of age, but often, we compare the performance of Japanese children with that of non-Japanese children to see if there are any cross-linguistic or cross-cultural differences.
We also study the social and linguistic development of multi-lingual children. For example, our recent studies involve Brazilian children residing in Japan. In addition, we have been studying the development of Japanese-English bilingual autistic children.
