INTEGRATED COMMUNITIES: A SOCIETY FOR ALL AGES
1998 INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION
A growing number of older persons are living in cities, towns, suburbs, and rural areas around the world. Between 1980 and 2020, the number of persons aged 60 and over will increase by 240 percent world wide and by 2030 it will reach 1.4 billion people. This growth of the aging population poses serious design and planning challenges. Many communities are not yet prepared for dramatic changes in the age composition of their inhabitants. It is time to present municipalities in all countries with recommendations for the accommodation and integration of older people into the productive lives of their communities. The United Nations 1999 International Year of the Older Person presents and exellent opportunity to develop and publicize such reccommendation.
The Integrated Communities Design Competition invites architecture students worldwide to join this effort and to apply their creative talents in developing solutions, which integrate older persons and also include them in the social, cultural, and productive activities of their communities.
世界中で高齢者は増え続け、彼らもまた都市社会の中で暮らしている。全世界の60歳以上の高齢者の割合は1980年から2020年にかけて240％増大し、2030年にはおよそ14億人に達するとみられ、こうした高齢者の増大はもはや回避できない設計課題といえる。しかし現在、大概の諸都市においてこの予想される人口構成の劇的な変化に対し十分な対応はなされていない、今こそ各国の諸都市に、都市社会と高齢者の在り方を模索し提示する好機といえる。1999-国連国際老人年は、こうした提案を構築、公表しえる絶好の機会となるものである。
このデザインコンペティションは世界各国で建築を学ぶ学生の成果を結集し、彼らの独創的解答、つまり高齢者と都市生活の協調をはかり、かつ彼らを社会、文化、都市活動に内包するような提案、を見い出すものである。
